    Name:  Kristina SorochanSorochan

    Grade: 11

Role Model:  A person who has greatly influenced me is Hayao Miyazaki. Although I have never met him personally, his films, as well as his life story and achievements, have inspired and continue to inspire me. Miyazaki's films contain themes of nature, spirituality, and animism, which create a comforting atmosphere. Miyazaki is also known for criticizing modern culture through his films, notably capitalism, over-consumption, and war. His critique of modern culture has inspired me to speak out against social injustice and seek to truly understand how new policies will affect people. Miyazaki often promotes a pacifist perspective as well. His films feature characters who have strong morals against violence, even when it supposedly promotes their point of view. When his characters do engage in violence, it takes a great toll on them, which shows the realistic nature of how violence and war ultimately causes more destruction than good. Miyazaki is also noted for his representation of either morally ambiguous or redeemable villains. These themes have inspired me to realize that all of humanity spans a gradient of good and evil, and nobody is either one or the other. I try to be sympathetic to everyone, even those with whom I do not agree with. These films have prompted me to understand people's behavior in the context of their own life. Lastly, Miyazaki's films give me hope in my future. All of Miyazaki's protagonists are self-reliant and have complex and individualistic personalities. In addition, many of his stories feature a "coming of age" theme where characters start out as more insecure but eventually find their way. This gives me hope that even though I am not completely certain about my future right now, eventually it will work out. Miyazaki's career inspired me to pursue my dreams in entertainment. A lot of Miyazaki's films are influenced by places that he has visited and people that he has met. This blend of travel and film mirrors my own love for international culture and art. I aspire to also pursue a career in animation, film, or media. Miyazaki inspires me to take influence from my surroundings and create beautiful art.

Teacher with the most impact:  The teacher that has had the most impact on me has been Mr. Labush. I had taken his English Honors class in my sophomore year. His class was intellectually stimulating and fascinating. Although there was a lot of work, I felt that it was instrumental in preparing me for both AP and IB classes. Additionally, I had taken college classes at Harvard Summer School and Brookdale Community College the summer after my sophomore year, so Mr. Labush's class was very useful in preparing me for those. Through challenging his students to synthesize deeper analyses and write more sophisticated essays, Mr. Labush definitely helped me become a better writer and intellectual. I would also like to thank him again for aiding me in getting accepted to the Columbia University Summer Program for Comedy Writing. This program was very entertaining and I had so many great experiences there, as well as in Mr. Labush's English class.

What do you like most about Shore Regional?  What I like most about Shore Regional High School is the flexibility and freedom of choice that each student is offered. Shore Regional offers a wide variety of classes and allows students to create their own individual schedules which tailor to their own individual needs and wants. In addition to having wonderful guidance counselors who listen to and take time to get to know each student that they advise, Shore Regional makes it possible for me to challenge myself as much as I want. I am very thankful that Shore Regional offers a wide variety of IB and AP classes, as well as many honors classes that are fascinating and intellectually stimulating.

Activities:  Currently, I am involved in swimming, French Club, and SAW. For academics, I currently take 3 AP classes: AP Biology, AP Calculus AB, and AP Language and Composition. Additionally, I take IB History of the Americas and IB Art. Outside of school, I have been playing piano since I was 2 years old and am currently studying at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Program. I also play organ as a volunteer at the Church of the Precious Blood in Monmouth Beach and occasionally at St. Mary's Church in Middletown. I have also been swimming for CJAC since my freshman year. Additionally, I study Chinese and Japanese in my free time and have plans to study abroad in Japan next year.

Future Goals/Plans:  In 10 years, I hope to be out of college and happily employed in the animation industry. I hope to study animation either here in the US or alternatively in Japan. Since the Japanese workforce is rapidly changing, finding work there as an international student is possible with good planning skills and flexibility. In terms of personal life, I do not have any specific goals but I hope that wherever I go, I will naturally develop lasting friendships and relationships that will benefit me and have a positive impact on my life. I also have a penchant for skiing and hope to live in an area where there are challenging options for both back country and normal skiing. Although I would prefer to live in an urban area, I hope that I will be able to own a large dog or cat in the future, once I have a stable career and personal life.
