    Andrea D. Begel
    Shore Regional Class of 1987

    Andrea received 9 varsity letters in field hockey, basketball, softball, and swimming during her three years as a student at Shore Regional High School and was recognized as the Diane Chapman Award winner in her senior year as the outstanding female athlete.

    Andrea lettered in basketball in her sophomore year but turned her attention to swimming in the winter months and was a two-year letterwinner and a member of the Meet of Champions 1987 freestyle relay team.

    During the spring, Andrea took her talents to the softball diamond where she excelled as a three-year letterwinner receiving recognition as an All Conference player in 1985, ‘86 and ‘87.  In 1987, she was named to the All-Shore and All-County teams, was a member of the Daily News All-Star Team and was recognized as an All-State All-Group outfielder. Andreas’s leadership qualities were evident at an early age as she was the team’s captain during her senior season.

    Andrea’s career as a field hockey player produced some of her most outstanding accomplishments.  As a high school player she was named to the All-Conference team in 1985 and ‘86. Andrea received first team All-Shore and All-State honors as a senior defender with a career total of 32 goals and 20 assists.  Her efforts and talents were awarded by being named as a high school All-American in 1986 and she received a scholarship to the University of Virginia. In 1987, Andrea’s high school uniform, number 40, was retired and she was honored in a ceremony in the Spring of 1997.

    At UVA, Andrea continued to excel as an athlete.  She was a four-year starter for the Cavaliers and was the captain of the team in her senior year.  Andrea was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team in her junior and senior years, and was recognized as a Regional All-American in 1988, ‘89 and ‘90.  In her senior year, Andreas was named to the Collegiate Second Team All-American squad.

    Not all of Andrea’s hockey exploits were done in school as she participated in the Junior Olympics as a high school player and attended the United States Olympic Festival in 1989 and ‘90.  And, not to be overlooked was the honor of being a member of the 1990 United States Under-21 Squad.

    Andrea excelled not only as an athlete, but was recognized as a scholar.  She received the Daily Register Female Scholar Athlete of the Year in 1987 and was the Valedictorian of her class at Shore in 1987.  In college, she was a member of the ACC All-Academic Field Hockey Team and a Dean’s List student.

    Andrea is currently stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia were she continues to demonstrate her leadership skills as a Captain in the United States Air Force.
