1988 Softball Team

    1988 Softball Team

The 30-2 1988 team is the best softball team in school history. They engineered one of the most remarkable seasons of any sport at Shore Regional, by winning Division, Shore Conference Tournament, Sectional and overall State titles, culminating with the #1 ranking in the state of New Jersey.

Returning only 4 starters from the 1987 26-3 team and an opening day loss by Toms River East, it was a true test of unity, hard work and redemption.

The dazzling rise to the number one ranking was fueled by a total team effort under outstanding senior leadership. Their powerful offense was led by seniors Chris Wajda, Robin Hagel and Kristen Pierson and was complimented by the stingy pitching staff of Kristen Trebino (23-1) and Stefanie Onacilla (7-1). The infield comprised of Caryn Goldman, Heidi Waterman, Jen Bhalla and Cindy Bell played inspired defense all season long. Hagel, Pierson, Dianne Demarco and Aimee Patock patrolled the outfield like vacuums.

The Blue Devils showed amazing character as the road to the State Championship found them facing elimination in 3 of the 5 State games.

Shore gained a 4-4 tie in the 6th on a one run single by Heidi Waterman and Aimee Patock lined a 2 out single in the bottom of the 7th, driving in Kristen Pierson, to give Shore a 5-4 win over South Plainfield in the opening round.

Down 4-2 in the bottom of the 7th, Shore scored 3 times against Hopewell Valley for a 5-4 win. Caryn Goldman hit an rbi single to score Chris Wajda to cap a 3 run rally.

After annexing the CJ II title Shore found itself down once again 5-4 in the bottom of the 7th to Hammonton. Singles by Robin Hagel and Heidi Waterman put runners on 2nd and 3rd before Chris Wajda surprised Hammonton with a single, when an intentional pass pitch came too close to the plate.

Shore completed its run for the Championship with Kristen Trebino pitching a one hit 2-0 victory over Whippany Park for the Group II State Championship. She needed only 62 pitches and induced 18 fly balls of the 21 recorded outs.

Each Blue Devil did their job, starters and subs alike, as character and teamwork were the cardinal characteristics of this team. Each player fulfilled their role to perfection to transcend the skills of the individual so that the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.

Numerous accolades were garnered by many of the players.   All County, All Shore: Wajda, Goldman, Pierson, Trebino, Waterman and Hagel.  All State honors went to Wajda, Hagel, Trebino, Pierson and Goldman
