    Ralph Yamello, a 1972 graduate, earned 5 varsity letters, four in track and one in football.  During his track career, Ralph was recognized as one of the top shot put throwers, both at the Shore and in the state of New Jersey.

    As a sophomore, Ralph finished the indoor season with a 3rd place in both the Shore Conference and NJSIAA State Group Championships and finished 5th in the NJSIAA Meet of Champions. In the Outdoor season, Ralph set the school record with a throw of 57’ 7” which was 5 inches off the national sophomore record.  Ralph qualified for the Penn Relays and the NJSIAA Outdoor Meet of Champions. During the summer, Ralph competed with Shore Athletic Club.

    In August, before his junior year, Ralph was injured in a diving accident and spent 3 ½ months in the hospital with a broken neck and paralyzed arm which caused him to miss the indoor season.  Ralph recovered to compete in the outdoor season and second in the NJSIAA CJ Group II Sectional and fourth in the NJSIAA Group II Championships.

    During his senior year, Ralph set the school record in the shot with a throw of 61’ 6” and was named to the 1st Team All Shore and All County teams.  He was also honored as a member of the 2nd team All State.  Ralph won the Shore Conference Championship with a throw of 60’ 6”, won the NJSIAA CJ Group II throwing 59’ 3”, which was a new meet record, and won the NJSIAA Meet of Champions. Ralph was also second at the Penn Relays and New York Relays. At the NJSIAA CJ Sectional Meet, Ralph competed in the discus winning with a school record toss of 155’ 11”.
