Paulette Russell Barham
Paulette Russell Barham, a 1989 graduate, had a record setting scholastic and collegiate career. As a freshman, Paulette was a named the Most Outstanding Swimmer at the Monmouth County Meet, won the Shore Conference 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle in meet record times and finished her first year winning the NJSIAA 200 and 500 freestyle races.
After an illness plagued sophomore year, Paulette won the Monmouth County 200 IM in the fastest time ever in a sanctioned NJSIAA Meet. She won the Shore Conference 200 IM in record time and finished second in the 500 freestyle. Paulette won the NJSIAA State Championship in the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle setting a new meet record.
As Paulette completed her last year of high school competition, she was named to the 1st Team All Shore in the 200 IM and 2nd Team All Shore in the 500 freestyle. In her final NJSIAA Meet, Paulette won the 200 IM and 500 freestyle which were her fifth and sixth State Championships. Paulette was named an All American and her NJSIAA Individual record in the 500 M stood for 28 years until broken in 2017.
Upon graduation, Paulette attended Clemson University where she was a member of the All Atlantic Coast Conference team for four years and an ACC Champion for three years in the 500 freestyle and 200 backstroke. Paulette was recognized as a five time All American.
Paulette is an All Time Top Ten Clemson swimmer in the 200 breaststroke, 400 IM and the 500 freestyle. She was an Olympic Trials qualifier in 1988 and 1992 and was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 2010.
